I've never been much of a person for planting from seed. I just never really had much luck with it. But my dear husband has had an influence, and these days we plant quite a few things from seed. All the lovely marigolds and bachelor buttons that graced the front of our yard last summer we planted by seed. Some even decided to reseed themselves, and we have baby marigold blooming all over the front again.

As you can see, my front yard tends to start looking a bit like a jungle by the end of spring with the young fuzzy-leafed catnip, the baby bouganvilla, the wild fennel plants, and the brightly-blooming nasturtiums. This year they started out with almost all yellow flowers. The later-blooming orange ones are starting to make an appearance now. And every year the flowers are a little different. Nature takes a hand when she's making seeds for these lovely flowers, and mixes things up a bit for us so we won't ever get bored. Of course, the bees have their say in the matter, too. They absolutely love these flowers. So do I. Not only are they a gorgeous reminder of my years in San Francisco, but they taste good. Peppery. Fun addition to salads. And the different colors of flowers even taste a little different from each other. What fun! Once I got these started, they've reseeded themselves every year. So I don't have to do anything any more, other than pull out the plants when the heat kills them off later in the year. But never fear. They'll be back again next spring.

This was one of my prayers: for a parcel of land
not so very large, which should have a garden
and a spring of ever-flowing water near the
house, and a bit of woodland as well as these.
