Some of the basic things I've found that make the few hours I do spend gardening a lot easier are the right tools. You've got to have a couple different pairs of clippers, a spade, a hand rake, and a few other things. A lot of my hand tools I inherited from my grandmother, an avid gardener, who wasn't lazy at all. She believed in spending money once to get quality tools for the job. And as testament to her belief, 50 years later her hand tools still work great. Not everyone's as lucky as I was, so here are a few tools you'll want to have.

I have a container garden, as the ground in my area is more rock than soil, so I mostly know about small hand tools. If you have a favorite large tool that is a must-have, please be sure to let me know, and I'll add it to the list.

Pruners One new item I do have and actully use instead of Grandma's old ones, are a pair of Fiskars pruners. Here's the new version, Fiskars 79366935 PowerGear Pruner

Trowel Nothing can beat Grandma's wooden-handled trowel. But here's a new one that you can buy now: B0001WYMWE English Garden Tools Trowel

Hand rake I haven't used a hand rake that's less than 50 years old, but this new one from Fiskars looks promising. This is the Fiskars 70646935 Softouch Cultivator.

Transplanter Need a transplatner? This one also has a nice, solid wooden handle. B0001WYMW4 English Garden Tools Transplanter
